Mary's Resolutions

Resolutions for 2007

One of the interesting things I have learned about making any lifestyle changes is I simply cannot will or think them into existence. If these desires never make their way out of my head, then they simply remain wishes.

If I truly desire change, I have to write it down or tell my goals to someone to whom I am accountable or who will hold me accountable for accomplishing these things. I am not making this up; research studies have borne this out. I am currently involved in two research studies that include writing as part of the intervention for behavioral change.

Most experts recommend having only one or two resolutions in order to maximize success. My resolution (or goal) for 2007 is to increase my activity level. In order to do this, I have several sub-goals or levels.

I enjoy running. I would like to take my running to the next level. In order to do that, I have to increase the amount of time and energy I spend running. To measure this accomplishment, I would like to run in at least one 5K or 10K every quarter (I think that is manageable and realistic). I will also be able to measure the impact this additional running has on my semi-annual physical readiness test (PRT) scores. My ultimate goal is to run a mile in 8 minutes or less.

I received a pair of Freeline Skates as my combination birthday/Christmas present. I would definitely enjoy being able to confidently zoom down the hills in our housing division on these Freeline skates. So far, I am able to push off and maintain my balance for a few feet. I am certain that with additional practice, I will be able to extend that momentum and remain upright. I am also certain that by the end of this year, I will be able to skate with great skill and maybe a little aggression...
