DUINS
Duty Under Instruction
This will be either the best time of your life or the worst. One of my colleagues said it was the next best thing to being a stay-at-home mom because she was able to spend so much time with her children. I did not have such a pleasurable time.
I was a quarter-system girl living in a semester-system world. None of my breaks coincided with anyone else's breaks. The only high point was no school for the entire month of December. In speaking with other DUINS candidates, I have determined that commuting distance plays a large factor in satisfaction with school. For the stay-at-home mom example above, her school was down the street. My school was 1 1/2 hours away by train (but the plus side was I got an incredible amount of discretionary reading done).
Another factor is the desire to do well. This meant I spent an inordinate amount of time studying and agitating myself (and my family). The plus side? I didn't cram; I remember most everything I was taught; and I managed to pass certification exams for ANP and CNS (Adult Health) simply by using two review certification manuals.
I am an active participant in the 1910 listserv. You can read my DUINS recommendation for Rush here.
